Workshops

In the spirit of sharing, collaboration and ACTIVE participations, we are going to run a series of workshops. Workshops are a bit like Discussions - only with less talk, and more doing.

For example, topics might include:

  • Internet and computing
  • Cool stuff
  • Hack (white hat only!) google, amazon, ebay or other popular sites
  • Travel
  • Art: photography, 3D, crafts , cooking, wellbeing

Use the "Edit Content" button to add a new workshop, lend your expertise to an existing workshop, or simply indicate which workshops you'd like to participate in.

Co-creating Stream: Join the vlog and blog meme troupe!

Co-creation is one of the deepest levels of engagement. It's what can get us advocating via word of mouth. That's because we become invested through our participation.? Stream, itself, is a co-created event. We want to create another level of co-creation - the online discussion and story of Stream and the unique collection of people who have come together to share and learn.

Join this workshop to become part of the community that blogs and vlogs the event. Interview participants (what a great ice-breaker - "can you answer two questions on camera?"), define the memes that will draw a thread through the event and produce insightful discussion online and during the event, itself.? Who knows, we might end up hijacking the entire affair!

We will be creating the aggregated video blog and blog. If you are a blogger - we need you. If you want to capture some smart people on video for our online experience - please come. If you want to co-create the online experience of the event - please participate. Experience? Whatever you walked through the door with is what we need - that and a willingness to make something together.

Session hosted by: John Bell, Alison Byrne Fields and Michael Darragh from Ogilvy's 360 Digital Influence

Bring your video cameras. We will bring some video cameras. Bring your blog, so-to-speak. Best of all bring your ideas.

Mark Zuckerberg's Treasure Trove: Facebook's Social Graph. Learn How to Mine It.

TouchGraph's visualization for Facebook

Everyone's talking about...the "social graph." Brad Fitzpatrick, Dave Winer, Dave McClure...

Mark Zuckerberg, boy wonder of Facebook, successfully created a lasting network between (virtual) friends at Harvard and other Ivy League instituions beginning 2004. Little did I know at the time, but Facebook was going to become my everything: friend space, organization tool, event planner and now, a travel guide. In short, Facebook is my portal, a portal for physical and virtual relationships/information.

The "social graph,"as Zuckerberg called it at the unveiling of the f8 platform, is the glue that holds the "it" website together. However, funny enough, no one has truly understood and mined Facebook's treasure trove. Here's where our workshop comes into play:

  • Why "graph" and why not "network"? It sounds like semantics, but is it really? Understand the science of Small World Properties and the relation to Facebook.
  • Analyze your own social graph with the help of TouchGraph. (If you are one of the few who are on MySpace, we'll use MIT's network topology visualization service, Semamyspace.)
  • What do you see? How can this information be used? If you are a marketer, Facebook's social graph and news feed can become your messiah.

Session hosted by: David Ambrose of Burson-Marsteller

Animation Workshop - Come create your own characters and short film!

Please note: Personal laptops are required for the animation workshop

Animation, the illusion of movement on film, can take many forms.

From carefully painted cel-animation to elaborately rigged 3D computer-generated, painstakingly slow stop-motion to the techno wonder of motion capture, animation transcends reality.

Now, more than ever, the wonder of this art-form continues to inspire and entertain, and the animation industry is red hot.

  • Want to learn more about it?
  • How about making some?

Join animation leader Uri Shinar, Claymation animator Rony Oren for what promises to be a lot of fun.

In this workshop we'll have 2 sessions:

First session:

  • The revolution of animation: some facts regarding the animation trend of the last few years, animation as cross-platform content and more. (1/2 hour)
  • Everybody can do it: participants will have a chance to really get their hands on the plastalina (molding clay) and learn how to create characters in an easy step-by-step way. (1 1/2 hours)

Second session:

  • In this session we will make animated short movies out of the characters we made. (2 hours)

The workshop will be guided by:

Uri Shinar served as CEO and President of Keshet Broadcasting (Israel) for 10 years until 2005. During that period he also helped create the original comedy channel for cable as well as media companies such as Keshet Interactive and Keshet Formats. Since 1979, Mr. Shinar has worked as an executive producer in an independent production company that has developed among other projects globally distributed animation. Currently Uri Shinar is the founder and CEO of Aniboom.com

Rony Oren has been producing animation since 1975. Since 1978, he has run his own independent studio, which has produced over 500 short animation films. He has won awards and achievement-medals in festivals and advertising competitions. His television shows for children have been broadcast in over 80 countries and have been bought by the Disney Channel, ABC, PBS in the United States, BBC and Channel 4 in Great Britain, and other networks around the world. He has also illustrated 25 children's books. Since 2000 Rony Oren has been head of the Animation Unit at Bezalel Art and Design Academy in Jerusalem, as well as serving as a professor. His specialty is stop-motion.

Web Usability Workshop

It is surprising how many web sites and web applications never undergo usability testing before they are launched. A couple of years ago one well-known UK company commissioned testing on their web site which had been live for several years - the results were so bad they withdrew permission for the test recordings to be used for training purposes. You may have heard of usability testing and you may know what it is, but have you ever seen it being done?

In this workshop you'll get a chance to take part in a usability test, either as the person running the test or the person taking the test. Or if you prefer, just observe the tests. We'll compare the results from two well-known competitor websites and discuss the significance of any common mistakes we find.

If you'd like to take participate in the testing, please bring along a laptop with wireless connectivity.

Tin Foil Hat Making Competition

Led by the artistically disabled but nevertheless enthusiastic Rob Stokes.

Some background:

For the full explanation, read the wikipedia article, but in a nutshell many conspiracy theorists, geeks and the paranoid have long believed that the wearing of a tin or aluminium foil hat will shield the brain from electro magnetic forces, alien interference and of course mind reading by nasty old big brother. In keeping with this tradition and with the slightly geeky nature of Stream, we will be holding a tin foil making competition.

The Process?

All materials will be provided and points will be awarded for effectiveness (at keeping the undesirable forces at bay), originality, craftsmanship, durability and speed of construction.

The winner will get to nominate a person who has to wear the winning tin foil hat for the rest of the day. Awesome!

Here is a pic from a previous competition which was held at Kinnernet. As you will see, their efforts were slightly less than exemplary and we aim to achieve a far better standard of design and effectiveness at Stream 07.

So there we have it. Look forward to having you all there and seeing the creation of many metallic masterpieces.

Warning: Rob Stokes is good at being an eMarketing geek and is truly untalented when it comes to arts and crafts. Anyone who has hands capable of making things that don't always look like garbage... now is the time to get involved.

Slack Rope Walking

Led by Ron Atazky.
Anyone can walk
; it only takes will and practice.

It is great fun when you walk on a rope that is hanged in the air between two trees.

In this workshop you will receive the basics of how to walk on a rope.

What is needed:
It can be done barefoot, but it is more comfortable when wearing flat sole shoes (most sport shoes will do), so please bring a pair.

We will learn slack rope and not tight rope; for this the only equipment needed is just a rope, which I will bring, so it means that each one of the participants will be able to continue practicing, later, at home.

Here is an idea that I feel is true:
The ways we think and feel are interconnected with the ways we move. These unions are so intimate that one can change neither the way he thinks nor the way he feels, without changing his movements’ repertoire. In other words, we can never really break out from our repertoire of intellectual and emotional postures, unless we change our movement postures.
In my opinion Walking on a Rope is for most people a dramatic change in their movement posture, actually a new dimension, and so it might lead to changes in other aspects as well.

Sailing - real or virtual

Led by Nic Fulton

We're by the sea, and there is due to be plenty of wind, and there might even be some boats. (If not we can pretend to sail, and learn about tacking, jibing, beating and reaching.)

We'll meet on the beach. If there are no boats, then no experience necessary, if we find boats, then we'll need a skipper per boat to keep things safe...

Sign up below to express an interest so we can begin to gauge numbers...
